Our team
Social Solutions is a social science research consultancy firm founded in 2012 in Suriname. It is led by Marieke Heemskerk (PhD, Anthropology), and supported by a small office team and a network of local, regional, and international associates. Our temporary associates include health professionals, gender specialists, education experts, and professionals from various other fields. While we primarily operate in Suriname, we also have experience working in other regions and beyond.
Our approach
We prioritize sustainable, participatory development in our key focus areas: mining, public health, Indigenous and Maroon societies, and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA).
To support our research, we use a combination of qualitative interviews, focus groups, and quantitative surveys. We engage with communities in both urban and remote interior settings, ensuring that our work is closely aligned with the needs and perspectives of the people we serve.
Social Impact Assessments
Over the past two decades, we have conducted more than 25 Social Impact Assessments (SIAs) for the mining sector, energy companies, and infrastructure projects. Recent SIAs include an update of the 2024 assessment for Newmont Suriname’s Merian Project and contributions as social experts to Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) in the emerging offshore oil and gas sector.

Social Solutions takes on assignments both as the main contractor, and as a subcontractor in larger teams. Since its founding, the firm has grown significantly, working with a diverse range of clients, including:
