- Kawina Development Plan
The Kawina are a sub-group of the Ndyuka Maroons, originally from the upper Commewijne and Tempati Rivers. Newmont Suriname recognizes that part of its operations take place on Kawina ancestral lands and has engaged us to conduct a needs and development assessment and to design a comprehensive Kawina Development Plan.
In close collaboration with the Kawina community, we will:
o Conduct a census to document community members, both in the Kawina area and in Paramaribo and beyond.
o Identify and prioritize realistic development needs based on community input.
o Assess the resources required to implement these priorities and guide long-term development.
This participatory process ensures that the Kawina themselves shape the vision and strategies for their future.
